Friday Finds, Winged Style: Great Blue Heron

I'm still marveling over the newest member of the Neighborhood Watch in my parents' community. After taking my mom out for an early birthday dinner, we drove by a small figure perched near the end of a driveway. At first, I thought someone had moved a lawn ornament to mow their grass and forgotten to put it back. So I implored my Ogre to turn around, and he crept the Charger slowly forward.

I've seen herons, but never this close up and so far from water - the nearest pond is a few miles away. I usually carry a camera now, thanks to Wordless Wednesday, so I captured a few photographs. He blinked once or twice, but seemed unruffled by the flash. That may have been because he was sleeping, but I prefer to daydream he was highly trained as a sentinel, like the Queen's Royal Guard.

Today I waded through Etsy in search of his kin. These unique birds certainly have inspired many lovely handmade creations.

  4. We have Herons that frequent our farm pond. They always remind me of pterodactyls when they fly from one side of the highway to the other.

Makeup Giveaway: All Natural Mineral Cosmetics by Madison Street Beauty

EDIT: Giveaway is officially closed. Congratulations to Rita Szlovencsák for submitting the randomly chosen 57th entry. Perhaps it's the hot weather and the drought in Delaware, but I have been daydreaming about being a mermaid. That's why I gleamed to discover the Etsy Blog's Mermaid Makeup Tutorial when looking through the list of articles where my new giveaway sponsor's products have shimmered. Madison Street Beauty has dozens of magnificent eye shadow colors that could enhance the sexy siren in any creature. One lucky winner will even get to choose five full size eye shadows, as well as a foundation, a setting powder and a blush or bronzer sample for free. Amethyst, an opaque vegan eyeshadow of medium purple, would be my first pick, fins down. Look at those sparkles! If choosing only five colors is too difficult, why not try some natural samples first? The owners, Bridget and Rhys, are currently celebrating their one year Etsyversary and offering an astonish...

Handmade Giveaway: Scarf from Elizabeth Koh

EDIT: Giveaway is officially over. Congratulations to Susana Silva for submitting the randomly-chosen 392nd entry. Normal people go to the beach in the summer, but I prefer autumn when it's more peaceful. The weather may be chilly, but that's why scarves come in handy! Not to mention that they're also a fun fashion accessory. One winner will get to choose any scarf under $40 from Elizabeth Koh to heat up an outfit. Elizabeth Koh is not one person, but two - both Janelle and Megan's middle names are Elizabeth, and Koh means island in Thailand, where they handcraft all their cotton and silk scarves. Every collection is named after a beach or island in Thailand and feature a range of weights for wearing in several seasons. Elizabeth Koh is committed to improving the communities where their products are made, so 10% of proceeds are donated to SOS Children's Villages in Thailand. Not only will you help feed others by buying a scarf this holiday season, you'll al...
